THE SECTOR
Australia’s agriculture sector is vital to feeding both local and global populations. As demand for food continues to grow, Australian producers are under increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices that boost productivity while reducing environmental impact. The sector also faces mounting challenges, including climate change, resource management, and the need for innovative solutions to ensure long-term sustainability.
Recent research highlights the dynamic connections between ocean and land systems, particularly in carbon and hydrological cycles. With noticeable shifts in weather patterns, terrestrial agriculture is becoming more intertwined with coastal and oceanic systems. Projects focused on ‘blue’ carbon are exploring carbon offsets for land-based activities, while terrestrial tree planting initiatives support carbon neutrality in seafood production—an approach already being implemented by Austral, one of Australia’s largest wild-catch fisheries.
Meanwhile, as global protein demand rises and competition for marine space intensifies, traditional ocean-based aquaculture is increasingly shifting onshore. Large, self-contained fish and seafood production facilities are emerging, designed to use less water and often integrated with aquaponic systems that repurpose fish waste to grow food crops.
OUR EXPERTISE
Blueshift works with farmers, agribusinesses, and industry stakeholders to support the adoption of sustainable farming practices, address biosecurity concerns, and enhance productivity across the supply chain. Our team offers strategic guidance to help clients optimise their farming operations and overcome sector-specific challenges.
We are also working with Australian governments to support farmers in building drought resilience. Aquaculture—both seawater systems in coastal areas and freshwater operations in inland regions—is emerging as a potential diversification strategy, offering an alternative income stream and a risk management tool for terrestrial farming.
